required for program
Northwestern Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) students earn an academic and professional degree that provides biblical and theological training to equip you for effective ministry or work in academic settings. You will study hermeneutics, biblical and systematic theology, and apologetics as you prepare for advanced ministry roles or build a foundation for further theological studies toward a Master of Divinity or doctoral degree.
The Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) is offered either fully online or on-site (meets one night a week for 4 hours). This degree can be completed in as little as 18 - 22 months. Our program also fulfills the requirements for 36 credits of the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree. Grow in your faith with individualized classes and study with renowned Christian professors who have expertise in areas including the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Old and New Testaments, minor prophets, and more. If you desire to gain a deep understanding of the rich theological truths found in Scripture and to guide others in leadership roles or professional ministry, explore how our MATS degree can set you on your path.
After a forty-year absence from the classroom, I felt called by the Holy Spirit, to go back to school and pursue a Masters of Arts Degree in Theological Studies (MATS). Schooling has changed a lot in 40 years. Studying theology draws one closer to God. As a result, I have a much deeper understanding of the Bible, God, the Holy Spirit, and God's love for His creation. I started the MATS program over 22 months ago and, at age 65, I will be graduating this May. Thanks to all who supported me in prayer— we did it!
You will think deeply about God and the Scriptures, broaden your understanding of Christianity, and strengthen your ability to communicate its teachings.
Note: Roles in some settings may require additional education or training.
