The philosophy of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) pre-licensure program has been framed by the concepts of the nursing paradigm, ministry and service, and by beliefs about a sovereign God within a biblically-based Christian Worldview. The BSN program provides a strong foundation in biblical studies, liberal arts, and the sciences. The program is organized around a framework of providing answers (program outcomes) to nine essential questions.

Why study nursing at Northwestern?

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries in multiple settings, including the home, church, community, and the world. There is a need everywhere for skilled nurses to provide quality care to patients. In Northwestern’s nursing program, you will learn the skills needed for the licensure examination, known as NCLEX-RN®, while adopting a ministry mindset toward healthcare.

The baccalaureate degree program in nursing at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and is ranked second in Minnesota by based on historical NCLEX-RN exam pass rates.

UNW Nursing Pathways

We offer two paths within the nursing program: the accelerated path and the traditional path. Both paths have the same content and a mix of traditional, transfer, and post-baccalaureate students. Each path provides excellent student support and an engaged student-faculty community.

We also offer transcultural learning opportunities to fully prepare you with the skills and abilities required in meeting the healthcare needs of diverse populations. Our small classes allow you to learn from Christian nurses working in the healthcare field as they encourage you to engage with patients on a deeper level.

With campus so close to downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, students can take advantage of opportunities in Minnesota’s thriving healthcare industries.

If you have a strong academic background coupled with compassion, are strong and courageous, and can see yourself ministering to people in need through a career in healthcare, this might be the right degree for you.

What will you learn?

You will gain the skills and abilities of a professional nurse generalist. You will participate in interprofessional collaborative practice, providing ministry and service in meeting the healthcare needs of diverse populations.

The School of Nursing has developed ten Graduate Competencies that are threaded throughout the nursing curriculum—progressing from awareness, recognition, and beginning application, to application and performance, to proficiency. The competencies are guided by the curricular framework, program, term, course, and clinical outcomes.

I am an alumni of the UNWSP School of Nursing, and I can proudly say that I am forever grateful to God for allowing me to be a part of such an awesome environment. The faculty and staff are such amazing people. The learning standard is very high, therefore we were pushed beyond our limit to possess the required skills and knowledge while in the program. I can say that it paid off pretty well considering the fact that our nursing program is ranked number 3 in the entire state of Minnesota [now ranked number 1].
